Canon started out in 1933 from a small apartment in Tokyo, Japan with the idea to create high quality cameras which all came from Europe or Germany at the time. The first Canon prototype camera was named the "Kwanon" after the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Shortly after, in 1935 the first ever 35mm focal plane shutter camera was produced named the "Hansa Canon". In 1950 Canon's President Takeshi Mitarai travelled to the USA to attend an international trade fair. While there he saw how the USA built their modern manufacturing factories and he returned to Japan with a goal to do the same. By 1955 Canon made its first move onto the global market opening a U.S. office and 2 years later opened up distribution centres in Europe and Switzerland. By 1967 more than 50% of Canons production was shipped overseas. Following financial trouble in the 70's Canon was forced to diversify by producing their first printer in 1979 named the LBP-10 which was the world's first laser printer with a semiconductor laser. Following the success of this launch Canon continued to produce high quality printers in the 80's and 90's launching their first multifunction device in the year 2000.
