Epson History

Epson, which is known as the Seiko Epson Corporation in Japan is one of the world's largest manufacturer of computer printers. Epson started as Daiwa Kogyo Ltd in 1942 by a clock store owner during World War 2 with investment capital from the Seiko Corporation. Daiwa Kogyo started as a manufacturer of watch components with just 22 employees. By 1963 the company had developed the world's first quartz watch and in 1969 the world's first automatic watch. As of today the major role for Seiko Epson is manufacturing watches known under the name of Seiko. Seiko Epson's printer division was formed in 1964 when they were required to time events with an electronic printer which they specifically developed for the 1964 Olympics. Just 4 years later Seiko Epson launched the world's first mini-printer, the EP-101. EP which stood for Electronic Printer was the base for the future printer models named the son of the EP-101 or EP-SON and by 1975 Epson was selling printers in the USA. In 1978 Epson released the TX-78 eighty column dot-matrix printer which was used in the Commodore computer game system. By 1980 they improved the design and sold the MX-80 which was the best selling printer in the USA during the 80's. During the 90's Epson continued to make high technology printers and developed the Micro Piezo system in 1993. Shortly after Epson released the first high resolution colour inkjet printer and is continuing to develop leading technology up to today.
