The Lanier Company was established in 1934 in Nashville USA by 3 brothers Hicks, Sartain, and Thomas Lanier. As a pioneer of office automation technology and dictating machines they ran a successful business up until World War 2 when the components for their products were in short supply. The brothers then entered the clothing industry in 1942 and by 1947 Hicks had enough of the industry because he thought the apparel business was too complex. After World War 2 they got a break by producing plastic discs that replaced the wax cylinders as a recording medium. In 1955 Lanier and 3M partnered to release a new thermofax copier technology. In 1962 Thomas Lanier was killed in a plane crash leaving Hicks to run the copier business and Sartain to run the apparel business. In 1977 Lanier was floated as a public company and run by a man called Wesley Cantrell for the next 25 years. By the year 2000 Lanier was facing financial problems and was taken over by Japanese rival Ricoh for $260 million. Today the Lanier name is still in use but as a part of the Ricoh Corporation, one of the world leaders in copier technology.
