Ricoh History

Ricoh is a Japanese company which was founded in 1936 as Riken Kankoshi Company. At this time their main product was sensitized paper. In 1939 they renamed the company to Riken Optical Company and started production of optical devices such as cameras. In the 1950's Riken Optical worked towards mass producing their cameras and in 1957 won an award for their mass production techniques. In 1962 Ricoh Industries was founded in the USA and a year later it was changed to Ricoh Company and during the rest of the 60's they established in several other countries as Ricoh Company. In 1971 Ricoh introduced the first office computer called the RICOM 8. During the rest of the 70's and 80's Ricoh manufactured and sold several leading edge technologies such as copiers, fax machines, document processers, laser printers and cameras winning several awards along the way. In 1996 Ricoh were one of the first companies to launch production of CD-RW discs. By 2001 Ricoh received 2 more awards, the Japan Quality Award and the Keidanren Chairman's Prize and had merged with rival company Lanier by the end of the year. Ricoh continued to receive awards and honours from governments around the world from 2002-2011 and were relentless in their growth and production of high technology equipment. Today Ricoh are the largest copier manufacturer in the world with more than 100,000 employees worldwide with a $300 billion net income in 2010.
