Samsung is a multinational conglomerate with more than 80 subsidiaries and affiliates worldwide united under the Samsung brand. Founded in South Korea in 1938 they first started business producing and selling their own noodles in Korea. By 1950 they expanded into other industries such as sugar and wool and businesses such as insurance, retail and securities and it wasn't until the late 60's they entered the electronics sector. In 1980 they acquired a telecommunications company and started developing telephone and fax equipment. During the 80's they also invested heavily into research and development and pushed the company to the front of the global electronics industry. Between 1990 and 2000 the Samsung group grew rapidly becoming the world's largest producer of memory chips, partnered with Sony to produce high quality LCD panels and started its own construction business which is responsible for the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The Samsung Aerospace division also produced aircraft, space craft, aircraft engines and gas turbines. Today Samsung is one of the most well known consumer electronic brands producing TV's, computers, printers, and smart phones with over 350,000 employees worldwide over its subsidiaries. |
